    Description

J B OWENS ART POTTERY SQUEEZE BAG HAND DECORATED CYRANO HANDLED MUG
A beautiful piece of American made Art Pottery made in Zanesville, Ohio.
It was made by the J. B. Owens Pottery and is part of their Cyrano line.
It also closely resembles pieces made by the Weller Pottery Company which that company called Turada.
Both firms were located in Zanesville, Ohio and I have been told that Weller actually purchased Owens in the early 1900’s but have found no conclusive verification for this.
This mug is very thin and light weight for an art pottery piece of this period.
The base color of the mug is a dark brown and the piece has a glossy finish.
The squeeze bag decoration is all done by hand in two colors, powder blue and white.
The piece is parked on the bottom with a J B Owens impressed circular mark but was difficult to photograph.
There is also an impressed number near the mark that appears to me to be either “830” or “230”.
I see no evidence of an artist signature or initials.
I do not have a book on Owens Pottery, but in the book
The Collectors Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery
by Sharon and Bob Huxford there are pieces of Weller’s Turada line pictured on pages 55, 77 and 108.
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.
    Age and Condition
This piece dates to circa 1900.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
This piece has been in my collection since 1988 and I always thought it was in near perfect condition until I examined it closely before listing it on eBay.
I always knew there were three tiny losses to the glaze at the bottom point of the handle (see photos) and a few minor nicks to the squeeze bag decoration (see photos).
I also knew that there was the overall crazing to the glaze that I always expect to see on an art pottery piece or this age.
However, the crazing on this piece is not really visible without a loupe except on the underside.
I looked at the mug under a black-light and found no other problems that weren’t visible from the start.
When I tapped the piece all over with my ring it just didn’t sound quite right around the top rim.
I could still see nothing but with a loupe finally did find a short crack at the rim.
This is pretty much impossible for me to find without a loupe, but it is there.
I tried to show this in the last photo.
I have since studied this area under a black light again and it appears the crack is about 1” to 1-1/4” long.
It is a very tight crack and it is a bit difficult to determine what is crack and what is crazing.
In all, it is still a very nice original piece of American Made Art Pottery in my mind.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
About 4.25” (10.8 cm) in diameter at the foot and sits about 7.75” (19.7 cm) tall.
    Approximate Weight
    About 1 pound + 2-7/8 ounces (536 grams).
