Owens Pottery 1901 Light Spirit Jug with Blueberry Decoration #793 JBO
J.B. Owens started his own pottery company in 1891. He built a new plant and started manufacturing pottery in 1896. The Utopian line was a high-glaze brown ware with underglaze slip painting similar to Roseville, Rookwood and Weller. Owens manufactured pottery for only 10 years and won critical acclaim but closed in 1907. The Utopian line is their most recognizable.
Here we have a variation of the Utopian line, LIGHTWEIGHT. The Lightweight line used a Utopian high-gloss glaze only with thinner clay. It is lighter in weight than the original Utopian but has more delicate painting and the shape numbers are in the 700's and 800's. The bottom on this line is unglazed. This jug is beautifully hand painted with a bunch of blueberries on a branch. It was difficult to capture the outstanding artistry in the pictures but it does looks stunning in person. Perfect for any mantle or book shelf.
Exceptional jug in that it has no chips,no cracks, no scratches to glaze, no repairs. Very minor underglaze crazing on this wonderful piece. It may appear more pronounced due to the macro lens used for the photography. Any non-perfections are from the firing/manufacturing process including glaze misses and glaze pops.
Authentic Owens Pottery. All pictures are original and un-edited.
