    Description

For auction is a wonderful arts and crafts piece of art pottery made by The J.B.
Owens Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The piece is known as a "Handled Mug" and it is done in Owens deep rich matte green glaze. The mug is a nice cabinet size as it stands 4 1/2" tall and has a diameter of 4"outside handle measurement. The bottom of the mug has a diameter of 2 3/4".
The mug has a corseted shape with a triangular applied handle. The mug displays a wonderful pattern of embossed grapes grapes and vines on each side of the mug. I call this my Grapevine Mug.
    This mug ha
s a wonderful deep matte green glaze that is pretty uniform throughout. Towards the bottom edge on 1 side the glaze is a little thin and you can see how thick this matte green glaze really is.
The mug is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips or major dings. There is a
    tiny
glaze fleck on the underside bottom and is considered insignificant.
On the handle is a glaze separation line, this is not damage as it was made this way.The inside has some dirt residue in the bottom from previous use. The mug is signed on the bottom with the incised "Owens" impressed block signature along with the number "1" incised above the name and the number 'A11" for the shape number which is also impressed.
    Owens pot
tery started producing art pottery in 1896 although they started in the Pottery business in 1891. This matte green line was introduced by Owens to compete with Grueby, Hampshire, Roseville, Weller, Rookwood and
Zanesville Pottery all of whom were producing this rich deep matte green glaze at the turn of the century. Owens Pottery stopped producing art pottery by 1907 as they closed their facility. They reopened making commercial tile and was successful till 1929 when they
    permanently
    closed. T
his will make a wonderful addition to any matte green pottery collection of art pottery and would look great on that Stickley, mission, arts and crafts bookcase.
This mug was made circa 1898-1905.
